Stretch the legs and get away to the Bay of Islands for Walking Weekend. Whether you are looking to spruce up your training, test a new stomping ground or enjoy a weekend away with friends and family, Walking Weekend has something for everyone.
With 18 walks to choose from over 3 days there is a walk to suit all fitness levels and ages, from short walks to an overnight tramp. Walking the Bay of Islands is a perfect way to experience this stunning part of Aotearoa. The variety of walks on offer will let you soak up the beautiful scenery, culture and history of the area.
Walking the islands is made easy and affordable – walk the 11knm around Urupukapuka Island or take the Motuarohia and Moturoa Island walk, which will see you set sail on the R Tucker Thompson – a traditional gaff-rigged schooner. Your local guide will keep you entertained with stories of New Zealand’s past from Captain Cook’s landing to the ghastly murders of the Roberton family.
For the seasoned tramper, the Cape Brett Lighthouse Walk is a must do. Rated as one of the best 100 walking tracks in the world, a breathtaking walk out to Cape Brett lighthouse and stay overnight or do the day trip which gives you the same amazing experience without the sleepover!
If relaxation is more your style, there are walks to vineyards for a bite to eat and wine tasting, a walk that takes you along boardwalks and lovely coastline ending with whitebait fritters at HQ or take a hike up to a spot in Paihia that gives spectacular views of the Bay before heading to Charlotte’s Kitchen for Sunday brunch.
Each walk can take up to 20 people so bring your friends and family. Plenty of the walks are suitable for kids so get them involved too.
All these walks are based out of Russell, the Bay of Island is a fantastic place for a weekend getaway with great restaurants, places to stay and plenty of things to do, even for the non-walkers out there.
