A parent-run playgroup for children aged 0-5. Currently runs Tuesdays & Thursdays 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Opua Community Playgroup has been running for many years and offers a fun and relaxed environment for pre-schoolers to play, learn and socialise in.
With an outdoor play area, lots of great indoor toys, (including a bouncy castle), and informal parent-led activities, children always enjoy themselves.  For parents, it is a great way to meet other parents, have a cup of tea and contribute to your child’s learning and development through play.

You will find us at Opua Community Hall, Beechy Street, Opua.

Our postal address is Po Box 53, Opua

Paihia/Waitangi Kindergarten

Nau mai haere mai ki te Kura Kohungahunga o Paihia Waitangi.

Paihia-Waitangi kindergarten can be found 100 metres from the beach, nestled against the hillside not far from Te Marae o Waitangi. Children attend from a wide geographical area – from Kawakawa to the central Bay of Islands including Opua, Russell, Haruru Falls, Karatu, Oromahoe and Pakaraka. The community is made up of families who come from a diverse range of cultures.

We are a staff of three full-time, fully qualified and registered early year’s educators with a part time support staff/administration person and consider ourselves privileged to be working with the young children attending the kindergarten. We have an adult to child ratio of 1:10.

The teaching team at Paihia Waitangi kindergarten are committed to an emergent, child focussed, child initiated, play and resource based curriculum embracing the principles of the national early childhood curriculum Te Whariki. We believe that it is our responsibility to notice what children are interested in, recognise the learning taking place and respond appropriately so that children can learn more about themselves and their world. We are passionate in our role to guide children to reach their full potential by providing and facilitating a safe yet challenging and stimulating environment that supports the acquisition of skills and knowledge; develops confidence to explore and experience new things; and fosters a love of life-long learning.

We have an enduring respect for the dual heritage of Aotearoa/New Zealand and the cultural heritage of all children, whanau and staff and this is reflected in our daily programme and interactions with the community.

Whakawhanaungatanga is an important part of the pumanawatanga (morale, tone, pulse) of our kindergarten and we pride ourselves on being a warm and welcoming centre where whanau are invited to contribute and participate in the daily programme.

We welcome visitors to come and view the kindergarten at anytime!
