The summer tourist season has stepped up another notch in the Bay of Islands with the arrival of the 2000-passenger cruise ship Sun Princess.

The ship anchored out in the Bay early yesterday with most of the passengers taken first to Waitangi Wharf by tender, then by bus to Paihia. The ship sailed late yesterday for Sydney after completing the last stop on its seven-port cruise of New Zealand.
The Sun Princess is the third of 30 ships expected this season, bringing an estimated $6million to Northland.
The passengers were greeted by a team of ``ambassadors’’ from Business Paihia handing out maps and answering questions, as well as by a kapa haka performance by pupils of Paihia School.
Rose Agius, of Queensland, said she had been around the world but had not seen many places where young children were taught their own cultures.
``I think it’s wonderful that they keep the traditions going.’’
The cruise ship season ends on March 5 with the arrival of the 2600-passenger Queen Mary II.
